Questions and Answers

Why should I choose your school?

It's important to understand that our school's mission is to cultivate and promote the cultural art of Okinawa Shorin-ryu karate-do.  We teach classical methods of karate training through knowledgeable and friendly instructors, with safety as a prime concern.  We offer an economical "pay by the month" method instead of commitments to long and expensive payment contracts.  In addition, discounts are offered to additional family members.  Our dojo has over 2800 sq. ft. of polished hardwood floor for training, and is equipped with traditional Okinawan conditioning equipment.

How long does it take to get black belt level?

Attaining first degree black belt level for the average student takes approximately 36 to 50 months of consistent training.  Lower belt rank testing (white, yellow, green, and brown) is conducted every month.

Can I get hurt?

Unfortunately, we can't guarantee that a student won't get hurt or injured.  However, you'll find that your safety is of utmost importance at our school.  All of the drills involving two or more people are pre-arranged, so everyone knows in advance what is happening and when.  In addition, we'll teach you how to train safely to prevent accidents.

What exactly do you do in class?

We teach kata, which are specific patterns of movements that are perfected in order to learn technique.  They are the basic building blocks from which the student assembles concentration, power, speed, and balance.  Prearranged drills between two or more people, called bunkai and kumite, train the student's timing, reflexes, and blocking techniques.  Emphasis is placed on control, technique, and cooperative learning from each other.  Defensive grappling methods using wrist and joint locks are also studied.
