Make an Informed Decision
As a
prospective karate student you should visit several martial
arts schools before deciding which one is best suited for
you. Here's a check list of things to ask yourself, look
for, and some questions you may want to ask before making a
decision.
 |
Ask yourself, what do I hope to receive from martial
arts training? |
 |
Observe one or more classes and ask if you can take a
free lesson. |
 |
Find out what style is being taught and the type of
training they do (ratio of kicks to punches, grappling
techniques, hard or soft style, sparring, aerobics,
etc.) |
 |
Ask to see the instructors’ certification. How long have
they been teaching? What is their occupation and
educational background? |
 |
Find out who teaches the classes. Are they black belt or
lower rank students? |
 |
Ask about testing requirements. What is required? How
long does it take to achieve rank promotions?
|
 |
Make sure you fully understand all the costs (monthly
tuition, contract commitments, association fees, testing
fees, uniform and belt costs). |
 |
Talk to the students. Do the instructors have a good
rapport with them? Is there mutual respect for each
other? |
 |
Are trophies lining the walls? This is an indication
that they are involved in sport or tournament karate. Do
you want to do that? |
 |
Find out how often you can train per week and when. Do
their classes fit with your schedule? |
